| In
1996, "Parade Magazine" designated Carbondale one of
the 10 "Least Expensive Places to Live in the United States."
Undoubtedly, the city's reasonable cost of housing contributes
to this.
The average price of a home in Carbondale is $75,000, even though
the city is experiencing a housing boom. New subdivisions are
being developed and spec homes are available. While many of these
new homes start at more $150,000, there are plenty of quality
existing homes from which to choose. Either way, homes in Carbondale
are rarely more than 10 minutes away from excellent shopping,
medical services and schools.
Carbondale's housing roots date back to the 19th century, and
many of the historic homes still standing are open for tours during
certain times of the year.
There is also a wonderful diversity of housing styles here. From
traditional two-story structures, to ranches, to earth-bermed
homes, to the geodesic dome style created by R. Buckminster Fuller,
a revered professor at SIU. Large, estate-like settings grace
the edge of town.
If you'd rather rent than own your home, you will find a variety
of rentals available throughout town including apartments and
single family dwellings. Whatever you're looking for, you can
find it in Carbondale.
